The Flower Garden

I live in a city. Just like most cities, it boasts more concrete than grass; It’s more stony than soft; it rises to heights taller than the trees and makes of itself a testament to human imagination. It’s a reminder of how civilized we can become in the midst of our wildness. I often appreciate the city with an ironic gratitude, for it is beautiful yet highly structured—mathematically sound, yet predictable. Even the landscaping has a tendency to look a little like a Minecraft world. You can’t deny the perfection of such a program—everything so perfectly in place. If we stick around long enough, it’s very easy to get sucked into the feeling that in order for something to be beautiful and good, it must fit neatly into the program. We unconsciously cultivate. We conform…
But
In reality, there is wildness. In human relationships there is messy growth, entanglement with weeds, droughts, floods, periods of no light…we aren’t flowers in pots outside of the bank downtown. We are not the lit-up holiday tree in the park. In one sense this can feel scary because no one is coming to water us and pull our weeds; we must attract bees with our own fragrance and send down deep roots to anchor us in storms—the same storms that will bruise us and tear our petals, having us feeling ugly and broken. Yet in that brokenness…in that space of cognitive dissonance and confusion…in that very moment is when we break free and realize we are WILD.
Welcome to Sacred Not Sorry. If you find yourself here, it’s because you have already discovered your beauty—your wildness—and are seeking a spot to bloom! Through creativity and love we can all get out of the flower pot and enrich each other’s soil. We can share the wind and the rain together in humble community. We can admire and appreciate the differences and uniqueness of our own flowers.
This is the first blog of many, and our hope is that it will inspire you to create, write, or just think about life in a different way. The goal for this space is to give you freedom and inspiration to blossom in exactly the way YOU were designed--for you to create the most beautiful, badass version of yourself. Just imagine us all: Gorgeous. Fragrant. Blooming. A wild and wonderful garden!
